Wildlife
Which animals in the countryside come for you, which run, and what sets them off.
Opens: From the start
Out in the hills and the farmland, the wild animals do not all behave the same. Some of them hunt you, and some of them run from you. Nothing pays you for hunting them yet, but kills are counted: animals hunted is on the Luck tab of the leaderboards.
Animals that come for you
The mountain lion, the panther and the coyote are predators. They go for you whether or not you’re armed, and a gunshot nearby brings them rather than scares them, even if they haven’t seen you. The big cats spot you from further off than a coyote does.
A mountain lion can kill an unarmed player. One that has come at you keeps at it while you stay close, and loses interest a few seconds after you get clear of it.
Animals that run
Deer, rabbits, hens, pigs and cows pay no attention to you with empty hands. They get nervous when you carry a sniper rifle, rifle, shotgun or machine gun where they can see it, and they bolt when a shot lands nearby, running for a while afterwards. Deer are the jumpiest: they spot a weapon from far off and run a long way. Rabbits are next, and pigs, hens and cows only react when you get close and don’t go far.
The boar
A boar is a coin flip. Some charge you; the rest crash off through the trees. You can’t tell which it is until it has noticed you.
Good to know
- Birds are ordinary wildlife. They neither attack nor flee.
- A pistol in your hand doesn’t worry the prey; only the long guns do. A shot of any kind does.
