How progression works

Everything you do earns XP, toward your total level, a rank for each team, and six skills.

Three kinds of level

Your total level is your whole character, the rank bar you see when you press F1 or Z. It’s what opens the big things: banks, groups, leasing a business, the premium dealership. It goes to 100. It grows from:

  • all of your team XP: every point you earn on a team also counts here;
  • a few awards of its own: the walkthrough (150), your first goals, a lottery win (150). Of all the achievements, only your first goals pay anything.

Skill XP never counts toward your total.

Team ranks. Civilian, Law Enforcement, Medic and Firefighter each have their own rank, up to 100. Switching teams loses nothing; the old rank waits for you. Team XP only counts for the team you’re on right now: sell fish or finish a board job as a medic and you get the cash, but no civilian XP and nothing toward your total.

  • Civilian rank opens the pimp’s harder jobs and raises his pay, and sets how big a heads-up race stake can be.
  • Police rank opens the armoury’s weapons and keeps your roadblocks and stingers down longer.
  • Firefighter rank opens the station’s equipment.

Skills go to 25, and each grows from its own work:

Skill Grows from What it does
Hacking successful alarm panel and vault terminal hacks Level 10 makes every hack a step easier, level 20 another
Robbing robberies you get away with, and sealed G6 cargo sold to the insider A better haggle at the pawn shop
Towing tow calls delivered It is your tow rank: better calls and trucks
Fishing every fish landed and every pot pulled Fishing 7 lets you buy the large cooler
Business business jobs and collecting a safe Your small-business reputation: discounts, a second slot, bigger earnings
Mechanics nothing yet Shown on your skills page, but nothing raises it today

You’ll know when it happens

Every time you earn XP, GTA’s rank bar flashes. A level-up is announced to the whole server, with confetti for a team or total level. To check where you stand:

  • F1 or Z: your total level;
  • /level: your team rank, and /total: your total level;
  • Skills & ranks in the F10 dashboard: everything, with your tow rank under Towing;
  • Profile in the dashboard: a card for each team with your counts on it, and the leaderboards to see how you stack up.

The team curve is gentler than the total’s, so your civilian rank usually runs a little ahead of your total level.

XP to reach a level

The total rank and each team rank go to 100; a skill stops at 25. Hacking has its own curve, so its first levels take a few hacks each (46 XP a successful hack).

The skills

SkillTop levelWhat the game tells you about it
Hacking25
  • Hacking can be used to gain access to secret data
  • A bank terminal deals a different puzzle each job — the branch decides which
  • Shooting a camera trips the alarm; hacking the panel does not
  • Hacking level 10 makes every hack a step easier, and level 20 another
  • Lester sells a hacking device, a laptop and USB drives: each makes a hack easier
Mechanics25
  • A slim jim opens a locked car without the keys
  • Damage comes off a repo fee, so bring it back in one piece
  • An idling engine still drinks fuel — shut it off with /engine
Robbing25
  • A mask keeps your name off the dispatch, and off the tape
  • Cut the fuse box and the locks fail open for as long as the power is out
  • A drill opens a vault door, and the deposit boxes on its walls
Towing25
  • Get in a tow truck and the dispatcher starts calling. /tow asks for a call right now
  • Reverse the hook up to the car and press the winch key; a flatbed lowers its ramp first
  • Every tow ranks you up with dispatch, and higher ranks get the calls that pay
Fishing25
  • The beach is for tourists. The money is out by the rocks and the kelp
  • No spot is on the map — look for the birds, or put a finder on your own boat
  • Hammer a spot and it dries up. Give it an hour
  • Short fish and garibaldi go back; no buyer will touch them
Business25
  • A slot's money waits in the safe at the business. Leave it a day and it earns at 60%
  • Jobs keep a business in shape; a run-down one earns a quarter of what it could
  • Renewing the same business costs more each term; it also earns more for staying
