Chat and Discord
How chat works, what the server says to everyone, how to link your Discord, and what is posted there.
Opens: From the start
Chat
Press T and type. A line that doesn’t start with / is said to the whole server, not just to people
nearby. It shows your name in your team’s colour, which turns orange while you are wanted, the same as your blip and
nametag, and a speech bubble shows over your head. While you type, dots show over your head.
| You type | What happens |
|---|---|
/pm [name or id] [message] (or /dm) |
A private message. Both of you see it in chat and as a pop-up. You can’t message yourself |
/r [message] |
Reply to the last person who messaged you |
/me [action] |
A roleplay action, in your team’s colour: * Kar: waves *. Everyone sees it, and it shows in your bubble |
/do [scene] |
Describes the scene around you, in orange: Kar (( the door is locked )) |
/players (or /online) |
Everybody online, with their ids |
/report [name or id] [what they did] |
Sends a report to the admins and tells you its number. One a minute |
/emojis |
Lists the emoji you can use. /emojis fire narrows the list |
- Emoji. You can’t type an emoji into GTA’s box, so type its name between colons,
:fire:, and chat swaps in the character. It works in chat,/meand/do. - Menus that ask you to type. When a menu asks for a name or an amount, your next chat line is the answer. It isn’t said to anyone.
- If staff mute you, you can’t speak, send private messages or use
/meand/do. You can still/reportand answer a prompt. - How it looks is yours to set in
/settings> Chat: a timestamp on every line, text size, width, height, where it sits on your screen, how much history you can scroll back through, and whether it fades after a quiet spell. It comes back the moment anybody says anything.
What the server says in chat
Some lines go to everybody, whatever they are doing:
- Somebody connecting, and somebody leaving: quitting, timing out, crashing or being kicked.
- A death, and who caused it. See Welcome.
- A level-up, with confetti for a team or total level. See How progression works.
- An achievement. See Achievements and leaderboards.
- A news line when somebody who has been identified reaches wanted level 4 or more, naming the crime and the area. See Wanted level and heat.
- A gas station running low or dry, and a Gruppe Sechs truck under attack. See Trucking and Gruppe Sechs trucks.
- A lottery draw, a new lap record, the winners of the week and the Purge. See Money, Racing and The Purge.
Announcements
Every so often the server says one line to everybody, picked at random from a short list:
- the Discord invite, and a reminder to donate to keep the server online;
- the lottery needs a ticket, and a ticket comes from a business;
- F10 opens the dashboard, Help reminds you of a key, and your stats and leaderboards are there too;
- there is a total level and a level for each team, and work on a team earns XP on that team;
- law enforcement is paid and earns XP by how they work, and an arrest usually beats a takedown;
- gang members carry cash, baggies and sometimes a balaclava, and drop them where they fall;
- a duffel bag worn into a hold-up makes the clerk fill it faster, and they turn up in dumpsters and in the boot of a hard repo car;
- dumpsters are searched with E, a stopped car that is nobody’s from its X menu, and what you searched stays empty for an hour.
If you haven’t linked your Discord, you get a second line each time, telling you how.
Discord
Join the KCNR Discord. You need to be in it to link your account and to suggest wiki edits.
Linking your account
Linking proves the game account and the Discord account are yours. It earns the Link Discord achievement, and a role in the Discord when the server has one set up.
- In game, type
/discordverify(or/linkdiscord,/discordlink), or choose the Discord row in/settings> Account. - If the Discord app was running when you connected, the bot sends you a private message with a code. Reply to it with
the command it gives,
!linkand the code. The code works only from the Discord account it was sent to. - If it can’t message you, chat shows the code instead. Open a private message with the KCNR bot and send it
!linkand the code. - The code is short and easy to read out. It expires in 5 minutes, works once, and asking again gives you a new one and cancels the old.
- Chat and a pop-up tell you the account is linked. The bot replies in Discord too.
One Discord account links to one game account, and the other way round. If either is taken the bot says so.
To unlink, type /discordunlink (or /unlinkdiscord), or use the same row in /settings > Account. Your role
goes, and the Discord account is sent a message naming the game account it was unlinked from, so the real owner finds out
if somebody else did it.
What the server posts there
A live feed channel, #echo, shows what is happening in the city. It carries:
- who connects, leaves and registers, and when somebody finishes or skips the walkthrough;
- everything said in chat, with the speaker’s account name, and
/meand/dolines. Private messages and the police radio are never posted; - deaths, arrests, takedowns, tickets, searches, and who is wanted and where;
- robberies, bank vaults, stick-ups and Gruppe Sechs trucks;
- finished pimp, repo, tow and trucking jobs, and fishing trophies;
- level-ups, achievements, regulars, the lottery winner and the weekly rankings;
- races, new lap records, the Purge, and changes in the gangs, the businesses and the seasons.
It works the other way too: what anybody says in #echo appears in game chat, tagged as coming from Discord.
Other channels worth knowing:
#updatesis the release notes. The latest show on the login card.#suggestionsand#issuesare forums for ideas and bugs. Every post gets a status staff can change (a suggestion goes from Needs Review to Under Consideration, Planned, Implemented or Declined), and anybody can vote a suggestion up or down.
