Death and respawn
Everybody is told how you died, you wake at a hospital for a small bill, and you keep your bank, pockets, cars and house.
Opens: From the start
Dying in KCNR is cheap on purpose. There is no revive, no lost levels and no loot lying on your body. You lose a small bill, whatever was in your hands (see Carrying things), and sometimes a worn bag. This page is everything that happens, in order.
When you die
- Everybody is told in chat who killed whom, and with what: “died (Fists, by a Ballas member)”, “killed name”, “committed suicide”, or just “died”. A car is “run over by” its name, a heavy object is “crushed”, and a fall, a drowning or the map itself is “misadventure”. A police officer, an animal (see Wildlife) or a gang member is named too.
- You see a WASTED shard under the same cause.
- Kills and deaths are counted on the leaderboards, a kill for the one who got it and a death for you.
- Your cuffs come off, and anything in your hands is put down where you fell.
- Whatever you were doing ends. A job or mission you were on fails with no pay (see each job’s page), a trade is called off with everything going home, an open boot shuts, a dumpster search or a stick-up in progress stops, and a robbery you were part of ends for you.
Waking up
You get a respawn button with a countdown on screen. It runs 8 seconds, or 3 seconds during the Purge. Then:
| Where you were | Where you wake |
|---|---|
| Anywhere in the world | The hospital nearest to where you fell, at a spot in its grounds |
| Right beside that hospital | The next nearest hospital, so you never wake up beside whoever killed you |
| In a cell, serving a sentence | Back in a cell, with no hospital bill. Dying is not a way out of jail |
| Killed by an officer at 4 or more stars | In a cell, as if you’d been arrested: see Jail and the law |
| Inside a house or a mod shop | At a hospital in the open world, like anybody else. Your Spawn in house setting only applies when you log in |
Your team makes no difference: a civilian, a police officer, a medic and a firefighter all wake the same way. You’re told “Discharged from hospital” when you arrive.
The hospital bill
Every death that doesn’t end in a cell costs you 2% of the cash you’re carrying, at least $50 and at most $1,000, and never more than you have. It comes out of your cash only, never your bank, and chat shows the amount in green.
| Cash on you | The bill |
|---|---|
| $0 to $2,500 | $50 (or all you have, if less) |
| $5,000 | $100 |
| $10,000 | $200 |
| $50,000 and up | $1,000 |
The bill is the same in a Purge. It goes to the city’s treasury: see Money.
What you lose
| You lose | When |
|---|---|
| The hospital bill above | Every death, unless you wake in a cell |
| Whatever you were holding in your hands, put down where you fell | Every death |
| A worn bag and everything in it, dropped where you fell for anybody to pick up | Only if you die wanted, or inside your own crime scene, and an officer is online. Otherwise it stays on your back |
| Till cash from a hold-up you haven’t got away from | Killed at the scene of the robbery with an officer online. It falls where you fell, for anyone to take, not the city |
| Your share of a job’s pay | The job fails when you die |
Get clear of the scene and the take is yours, however you die afterwards. With no officer online nothing is lost but the bill.
What you keep
- Your bank, which nobody can take from you.
- The items in your pockets. A death never empties them.
- Your weapons, which are given back as you wake.
- Your cars and your houses.
- Your levels and XP.
Spawn protection
Every time you spawn you get 10 seconds in which nobody can hurt you. It ends the moment you draw a weapon, and you’re told when it’s over. The first 15 minutes of a new character, the walkthrough, have their own protection and cover this one.
Killing other players
A civilian who kills another player commits Murder: 4 stars, or 5 if an officer can see it. See Wanted level and heat. A police officer who kills a civilian with 4 or more stars makes a takedown, which counts as an arrest and pays three quarters of the arrest XP.
Tips
- Bank your cash before a fight. The bill, a stick-up and a robbery drop all take cash, never your bank.
- Wear a bag only when you must. A worn bag is the one thing a death can take, and only while you’re wanted.
