Keys and menus

The keys you use every day, what each menu holds, and the commands worth knowing.

These are the defaults. Most keys can be moved in Settings > Key Bindings > FiveM, but once you have played, FiveM keeps your old choice for that action, so a default that changes later won’t reach you.

Everyday keys

Key What it does
` (left of 1) Personal assistant
F10 Dashboard (/help opens it too)
F1 Your cash and bank for 8 seconds with your rank bar; while wanted, how your heat is going
Z The same as F1, and it widens the map: radar, big map, whole map, back. It returns on its own after 10 seconds
F2 Scoreboard
T Chat. See Chat and Discord
I Your pockets. See Items and your pockets
X The menu for whatever is in the middle of your screen close by: a person, a car. In a boat, it sets a fishing pot
E Pick up, a car’s boot from the back, an ATM, City Hall’s counter, the scrapyard, a pump, a dumpster to search, a car window to smash. Floating prompts show their own key
Y A shop, pawn or bank counter, a Bait & Tackle, and the card on screen (a party invite, a crew job, a trade)
L Declines the card on screen
H The house menu, inside a house (in a car it’s the headlights). A bag’s contents, when you stand over one
G Get in at the nearest door, or swap seats
F Pay respects, next to a body
Right Alt Tap: mask on or off. Hold: a wheel of your masks and bags
Left Alt Put down what you’re holding (in a car, a bag-sized thing goes on a seat), or get off somebody’s back. See Carrying things
K Your personal vehicles
B (hold) Point
Left Ctrl Stance: stealth, crouch, prone
F9 Emotes. Numpad 1 2 3 7 8 9 are your six emote slots, Numpad 0 cancels
J Cast a fishing line, or put the rod away. At the wheel of an emergency vehicle with its siren on, silence it
- / = A boat’s anchor / its fish finder
Numpad 4 / Numpad 6, N Indicators, hazards
Numpad 8 (hold) Push a vehicle
Horn Join a race from its card

Walking onto a house’s door marker opens that house’s menu.

Two keys do two jobs. Numpad 8 is both your fifth emote slot and “push a vehicle”, and B is both pointing and a police officer’s visual contact. If one gets in the way of the other, move one of them in Settings > Key Bindings > FiveM.

Picking things up

A thing on the ground shows a floating prompt. E picks it up. A pile of cash says “Take $X cash” and takes it all at once; a pile of several things opens a menu where you choose how many, starting at one. A bag shows H “Look inside” to see what it holds. With several things underfoot, the last one you reached is offered first, then the next once it’s gone.

Getting in and swapping seats

G gets you in at the nearest door only when the vehicle is nearly stopped, is on the ground, and has a seat free. A front passenger no longer slides into the driver’s seat on their own, so to swap seats press G. The front pair swap with each other, and so do the rear pair. You can’t swap onto a seat with a bag on it, and you’re told what is there.

People

  • X on anybody alive right next to you, a player or a passer-by, offers Lift Up (over your shoulder) and Piggyback (you climb on their back). It isn’t offered while you are already carrying, in an animation or attached, or on somebody cuffed or being frisked. Left Alt puts them down, or gets you off.
  • Stand next to a body, a player’s too, and a prompt offers F Pay respects. You can pay once per body. What happens to a player who dies is on Death and respawn.

On a team

  • Police: M megaphone; middle mouse button to arrest, ticket or take visual contact (B takes visual contact too); 1 the number-plate reader; Left Alt police tech. See Police.
  • Medic: Y accepts a call. See Medic.
  • Firefighter: Y sets a waypoint to the fire. See Firefighter.
  • Tow truck: Y the radio. See Tow dispatch.
  • Any emergency vehicle: J silences the siren while you drive it and it is on.

The menus

  • Personal assistant (`): Voice, Walking Styles, Moods, Clothing, Emotes, Scenes, Party, Walkie Talkie.
  • Dashboard (F10):
    • Profile, Skills & ranks, Your goals, Personal vehicles, Achievements. Profile has a card for each team with your counts on it; the Civilian card shows your repo jobs done (easy, medium, hard), failed, and your best time on each;
    • Your goals also holds today’s work board, above your first goals;
    • Achievements lists every one you have earned and when. See Achievements and leaderboards;
    • Properties: your houses and businesses;
    • Help: how things work, missions (with today’s work), activities, commands, keybinds and the 10 codes;
    • Leaderboards: this week, last week, all time, and street racing. Trucking, petrol, fishing and business counters are on them too; see Achievements and leaderboards.
  • /settings:
    • Account: link or unlink your Discord. See Chat and Discord;
    • Chat: a timestamp on every line, text size, width, height in lines, how far in from the left and down from the top, how many lines of history you can scroll back through, and whether chat fades after a quiet spell;
    • Language;
    • Unit System, which only shows what GTA’s own setting says, because you change it in GTA (see Units below);
    • Speedometer (complex, simple or off), FPS type, and Important Global Blips, which keeps your own properties on the map at any distance.
  • The phone is a camera. Use it from your pockets: Up opens the camera, Space takes the picture, Left Ctrl leaves it, Backspace puts it away. You can’t call anyone, but job contacts ring you.

Units. Weights, lengths, distances and speeds follow GTA’s own Settings > Display > Measurement System: metric or imperial. Two things are always in kilometres: the mileage on your personal vehicles, and the distances on street racing tracks and boards.

When staff change the world

Two settings can be switched on for a while, and both are off normally:

  • No nametags. Nobody has a name over their head, and the voice icons go too, so you know people by their car and their voice.
  • No player blips on weekends. On a real-world Saturday or Sunday (server time, London) every player blip leaves the map, the police’s included, so weekend chases are harder to follow.

The Purge is its own event; see The Purge. Both situations hold for every player on the server until staff switch them off.

Tips

  • If a menu ever leaves your keyboard stuck, open the F8 console and type unstick.
  • A second press of F1 or Z does nothing while the counters are still up.
  • The first time you stand somewhere new, a hint explains it. See Your first hour.
